For most businesses, the first encounter with generative AI was a chat window: ask a question, get a paragraph back. Useful, but passive. The person still had to read the answer, open the system and do the work. The more consequential change of the last two years has been quieter. The leading model providers have made their models dependable at tool use: reading a request, choosing a function, calling it with structured arguments and acting on the result.
What the providers have shipped
Anthropic’s Claude models support tool use through the Messages API, and Anthropic introduced the Model Context Protocol as an open standard for connecting models to data and systems. Microsoft offers OpenAI models through Azure with enterprise controls, and Copilot Studio lets organisations build agents that act across Microsoft 365 and line-of-business systems. Google’s Gemini models support function calling and are available to enterprises through Vertex AI. Different products, one direction: models that do not just describe the next step, but take it.
From chat widget to digital colleague
Once a model can call tools reliably, it can carry a task from start to finish: read an incoming WhatsApp enquiry, check live stock, quote from an approved price list, book a delivery slot and hand the conversation to a salesperson with a summary. That is the pattern behind Augustus AI, and the same pattern applies to back-office work such as matching payments, routing documents or chasing approvals.
The boundary is the product
An agent that can act can also act wrongly, so in our agentic AI integrations the model is treated as a component behind a boundary, never as the system itself. Three rules hold in every build:
- 01Strict data boundariesThe agent reaches your systems only through narrow, purpose-built functions. It can read what its job needs and change only what its job changes, with no open database access.
- 02Human-in-the-loop escalationAnything that commits money, makes a promise outside policy or falls outside the agent’s approved knowledge goes to a named person, with the context already summarised.
- 03Local audit logsEvery decision is recorded with its inputs and the tool calls it made, so a person can review what happened, and why, without reconstructing it.
Before an agent touches anything live, we run it against a sample of the client’s real records and compare its decisions to a person’s, case by case. Then it runs in shadow beside the person doing the job until the two agree. The seven-stage delivery protocol builds this in.
What it means for a Zimbabwean business
The frontier models are the same in Harare as anywhere else. What differs is the work around them: multi-currency pricing, mobile-money settlement, enquiries that switch between English, Shona and Ndebele, and connectivity that cannot be assumed. That local engineering is where an agent either earns its place or does not.
