OpenChief Software Engineer
You lead engineering at Silverconne: you set the technical direction for our AI business websites, custom software and agentic AI integrations, organise the team that builds them, and stand in front of clients as the person accountable for what we ship.
We reply to every application, including the ones we decline.
- Team
- Engineering
- Location
- Harare, Zimbabwe
- Arrangement
- Full-time, Harare-based
- Pay
- We state the pay band in the first call, before any working session. The working session is paid at a rate agreed before it starts.
THE WORK
Why this role exists, and what it is.
Our clients run their sales, payments and customer service on what we build, and the work now needs one senior engineer who owns the architecture, the standards and the people, rather than spreading those decisions across the team.
What you would be doing
- Setting the technical direction and architecture for every product and client build, and writing it down so the team can follow it
- Organising the engineering team: planning the work, setting priorities, assigning ownership and keeping delivery on the agreed dates
- Leading the design and delivery of AI features and agentic AI integrations, from first prototype to monitored production
- Reviewing code and design decisions, and setting the standards for quality, security, testing and documentation
- Engaging directly with clients: leading technical scoping sessions, explaining trade-offs in plain language, and owning the technical relationship through delivery
- Owning production reliability, including incident response and the occasional evening go-live
- Hiring, mentoring and developing engineers
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Two lists, and the second one is genuinely optional.
What you need
- A bachelor’s degree in Technology focused on Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AIML), Data Science, or a closely related field (mandatory)
- A master’s degree (mandatory)
- A proven, demonstrable track record of excellence in software engineering: production systems you designed or led, that you can show us and walk us through in detail
- Strong team organisation: you can plan and run the work of an engineering team and keep it delivering to agreed dates
- Strong client engagement: you can lead a client meeting, turn a business problem into a technical plan, and keep the client informed and confident through delivery
What helps but is not required
- A doctorate or any other qualification above a master’s degree
- Experience shipping AI or machine-learning systems, including LLM-based agents, to production
- Experience with TypeScript, Next.js and Postgres, or a comparable modern web stack
WHAT TO EXPECT
Read this part before you apply.
- This is a hands-on leadership role: you write and review code as well as leading the team.
- You will be accountable for production. That includes planned evening go-lives when a client cuts over.
- Both degree requirements are firm. We verify qualifications before an offer is made.
THE PROCESS
What happens after you send it.
- 01Your CV, copies of your degree certificates, and a short note on the most significant system you have designed or led
- 02A 45-minute call: we describe the role and the pay band honestly, and you decide whether to continue
- 03A technical working session on a real architecture problem from our client work, timeboxed and paid
- 04A conversation with the leadership team about how you organise a team and handle clients
- 05Reference checks and verification of qualifications, then a decision within five working days
