OpenFull-stack engineer
You build and maintain the systems clients run their businesses on — TypeScript, Postgres, and the unglamorous parts of accounting logic that have to be right every time.
We reply to every application, including the ones we decline.
- Team
- Product
- Location
- Harare, hybrid
- Arrangement
- Full-time, two to three days a week in the office
- Pay
- We state the band in the first call. The take-home is paid at an hourly rate agreed before you start it.
THE WORK
Why this role exists, and what it is.
Two products, a website platform and an assistant are currently maintained by a team small enough that any absence is felt. We need a third pair of hands that can own an area.
What you would be doing
- Building features in TypeScript across the stack, against Postgres
- Writing the pricing, tax and reconciliation logic where being off by a cent is a defect
- Working on the integrations that decide whether we win deals: fiscal submission, Paynow, bank statement formats, WhatsApp
- Carrying a share of production support for what you ship, including the occasional evening cut-over
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Two lists, and the second one is genuinely optional.
What you need
- Three years or more building web applications you have had to maintain afterwards
- Real SQL — you can read a query plan and you know why an index is not being used
- The instinct to check a total against a second source before believing it
- Written communication good enough that a client-facing colleague can act on your notes
What helps but is not required
- Experience of accounting, invoicing, payroll or payment integrations
- Next.js and React on the front end
- Having worked somewhere small enough that you talked to the customer
WHAT WE ARE HONEST ABOUT
Read this part before you apply.
- The domain is accounting and school administration. It is interesting once you know it and dull if you never learn it.
- You will support what you build. That shapes what you choose to build.
- Our users are on mid-tier Android handsets and mobile data, so performance is a requirement and not a preference.
THE PROCESS
What happens after you send it.
- 01A CV or a repository, and a short note on something you built and then had to maintain
- 02A 45-minute technical conversation, no whiteboard algorithms
- 03A paid take-home exercise, timeboxed to four hours, on a problem resembling our actual work
- 04A conversation about the exercise, then an offer
